How to Get from Ao Nang Beach to Railay Beach: A Guide to Your Adventure

In Krabi, there are two main places to buy long-tail boat tickets to Railay Beach: Ao Nang Beach and Noppharat Thara Beach. You can choose either option depending on where your hotel is or where you are at the time.

Both options are convenient, but Ao Nang Beach is usually much busier and often has longer lines. We chose Noppharat Thara Beach instead and found it less crowded and faster, which made the whole process easier and more relaxed.

Dealing With Changing Weather in Krabi

Weather in Krabi can change very quickly. A sunny morning can turn into a tropical downpour, which is exactly what happened to us on the way to Railay Beach. Because of this, we always carry ponchos with us.

Even with sudden rain, the experience is still beautiful. Both sunshine and rain add their own charm and make exploring Railay Beach feel more adventurous and unique.

Exploring Railay Beach: Navigating the Crowds and Hiking to Tonsai Beach

When you arrive at Railay Beach, you will see many long-tail boat taxis lined up along the shore. This was something we did not enjoy as much, especially if you are planning to swim, since the area can feel crowded.

Because of this, we decided not to swim there. Instead, we spent our time walking along the beach and hiking over to Tonsai Beach, which felt quieter and more enjoyable for us.

Walking to Diamond Cave on Railay Beach

We decided to take a scenic walk from Railay Beach to Diamond Cave, also known as Phra Nang Nai Cave, and the walk was just as memorable as the cave itself. Along the path, we saw playful monkeys and enjoyed the calm, lush surroundings.

Inside the cave, we were impressed by the natural beauty. The stalactites and stalagmites create a striking scene and show just how incredible nature can be.

Monkeys at Railay Beach

At Railay Beach, you will often see playful monkeys, especially near the caves. They are fun to watch, but be careful because they like grabbing shiny items such as phones, sunglasses, and bottles.

If you want more monkey encounters, you can combine your visit with a hike on the Monkey Trail in Ao Nang or plan a day trip to Monkey Beach on Phi Phi Island. We have detailed guides for both, including our Ultimate Guide to Hiking the Monkey Trail in Ao Nang, Krabi and Visit Monkey Beach: A Unique Encounter on Phi Phi Island, where you will find helpful tips and highlights.

Hiking from Railay Beach to Tonsai Beach

The easiest way to start the hike to Tonsai Beach is by following the well-marked trail near Railay Beach. This route is more straightforward and less challenging than the alternative path.

Tonsai Beach Hike Entrance: The Easier Way

Our Hike from Railay Beach to Tonsai Beach

We decided to hike from Railay Beach to Tonsai Beach, and the walk took about 45 minutes. It turned into more of an adventure than we expected. At the start, it was a bit confusing to know which trail to take.

Later, we learned there are two routes: an easy one and a more difficult one. Without realizing it, we chose the harder path, while the easier trail was the one we missed. Even so, the hike was still very rewarding. We walked through lush tropical forest and enjoyed beautiful scenery along the way, which made the effort worth it.

A Surprising Moment on the Trail

Seeing this root was a bit unsettling. While hiking through the jungle, it looked so much like a snake that it made us stop and double-check before moving on.

Nearing Tonsai Beach

As we got closer to Tonsai Beach, we passed a few old, abandoned bamboo houses, which added a quiet sense of history to the hike. With the heat building up, we were more than ready to reach the beach and cool off in the refreshing water.

Arriving at Tonsai Beach

Finally, we arrived at Tonsai Beach and jumped straight into the water. It was surprisingly warm, almost like a natural jacuzzi.

Because of low tide, the water was shallow and not as refreshing as we hoped. Still, it felt great after the hike and was a nice way to cool down before relaxing on the beach.

A Quiet Moment at Tonsai Beach

Tonsai Beach was stunning and completely empty, with no tourists around. We had the whole beach to ourselves, which made the experience feel calm, peaceful, and very private.

At Tonsai Beach, you can rent kayaks, play a game of volleyball on the beach, or join a rock climbing class with local instructors.

Relaxing at Tonsai Beach Before Heading Back

Even though the beach was almost empty, one restaurant was open where we stopped for refreshments, including a refreshing mango smoothie. The place was quiet, clean, and had a few beach beds where we could relax for a bit.

After spending some time there, we hiked back to Railay Beach, choosing the easier route this time, which made the return walk much more relaxed.

Taking the Easy Trail Back to Railay Beach

The easier trail back was a breeze and much more relaxed. Along the way, we enjoyed beautiful beach views, and the scenery made the walk back to Railay Beach feel especially rewarding.

Finding Our Boat Back

At first, we could not find our boat driver, but somehow he spotted us and called us over to hop on the boat. Throughout our time in Thailand, we noticed that Thai people have an amazing ability to recognize faces. They really do not seem to forget one.

Returning to Ao Nang Beach

Heading back to Ao Nang Beach was a lovely experience, with a refreshing breeze on the boat. Tired but happy after a full day, we were already looking forward to a good dinner at the Ao Nang Night Market.
