Discovering Sint Maarten
In our travels, we’ve visited Sint Maarten many times, and each trip reveals something new. This Caribbean island, split between Dutch and French sides, keeps us eager to return.
Small Island, Big Adventures
Though only 37 square miles, Sint Maarten blends cultures and experiences, offering endless adventures that have truly captured our hearts.
Exploring the Dutch Side
We’ve spent most of our time on the Dutch side, home to the world-famous Maho Beach. Here, the thrill of travel comes alive as planes land so close you feel like you could almost touch them. The Dutch and Caribbean influences mix into a colorful atmosphere, making every moment on this small island a new adventure.
Short on time?
Maho Beach Experience
Maho Beach sits right next to Princess Juliana International Airport and is easy to reach by local bus or taxi. If you drive, parking can be tough during busy hours, but with patience, it’s manageable. The beach is across the runway and ranks among the top attractions in Sint Maarten, drawing tourists and cruise ships eager to see the dramatic landings and takeoffs.
Before you go, check the airplane schedule on the airport’s website or at many hotels that post it in their lobbies. Plan to spend hours here—swimming, sunbathing, or simply watching planes. We spent over 5 hours enjoying the beach, meeting people, and soaking in the thrilling atmosphere.
Takeoffs turned out to be even more exciting than landings. The jet blast shakes the beach, and the sound of people screaming with excitement makes it unforgettable. It’s truly an epic adventure. You can also watch more of our moments on our YouTube channel.

Maho Beach Safety Tips
- Secure your glasses – Hold them during takeoff to prevent sand and wind from blowing them away.
- Avoid the fence – Jet blasts are strongest near the fence; stay back to avoid injury.
- Protect your camera/phone – Sand and debris can hit hard; use a cover or bag during takeoff.
- Follow posted signs – Obey airport and beach safety instructions at all times.
- Watch your belongings – Crowds swell when cruise ships arrive, so keep valuables close.
- Hydrate and use sunscreen – The sun is intense, so drink water and reapply SPF often.
What is the best time of day to visit Maho Beach?
The best time to visit Maho Beach depends on what you want. For a peaceful swim, head there after 3:30 PM when most planes are gone and the beach is quieter. If you’re chasing the thrill of jet blasts, around 1 PM is best, as that’s when the big jets usually take off. For a mix of beach time and food, visit at lunchtime—you’ll catch the takeoffs while enjoying a meal at the beachfront restaurants.
Is Maho Beach Safe for Kids?
Maho Beach is exciting, but families with young children should be careful. Planes fly low over the runway, and the jet blasts can be strong enough to push people around. The beach also gets crowded, which may not be ideal for kids.
Swimming is safe, and the views are beautiful, but the jet blasts and sand can be risky for children. If you bring kids, hold them tight, watch them closely, and protect their eyes from flying debris.
Swimming at Maho Beach
The water at Maho Beach is clean, warm, and a striking turquoise, perfect for swimming. In May and June, it was calm and inviting, creating a relaxing experience. Soft white sand lines the shore, adding comfort and beauty to the swim.

Where to Eat at Maho Beach
There are only a few dining spots at Maho Beach, but the standout is Sunset Bar & Grill. It’s famous for oven-baked pizzas named after airlines—our favorite is the vegetarian Air France pizza. They also serve tasty desserts.
Enjoying a strawberry smoothie on Maho Beach while soaking in the breathtaking views was pure bliss.

Driftwood Boat Bar: A Beachfront with Delicious Food and a Refreshing Breeze
Another great choice at Maho Beach is Driftwood Boat Bar, located on the left side of the beach. It’s a popular spot for breakfast, tasty fried shrimp, burgers, sandwiches, and finger foods. Pair your meal with a refreshing drink while enjoying the ocean breeze.
